Inside the Tower

The visit takes you from the bastion up through the tower floor by floor.

Bastion: the six-sided platform over the river, with openings for 17 cannons.

Governor's Hall: an eight-sided room on the first floor.

King's Hall: on the second floor, opening onto a loggia.

Audience Hall: on the third floor, with a fireplace.

Chapel: on the fourth floor, under a rib-vaulted ceiling.

Terrace: the top of the tower, with wide views over the Tagus.

Accessibility

The upper floors are reached by a spiral staircase. Entry is capped at 60 people every half hour, partly because the staircase can't handle many visitors at once.

Interesting Facts About Belém Tower

Its official name is the Tower of Saint Vincent, after Lisbon's patron saint.
It was built on a small island in the Tagus. The shoreline later advanced until it reached the tower; the popular story that the 1755 earthquake moved the river is not accurate.
The carved rhinoceros probably depicts the animal King Manuel I sent to Pope Leo X in 1515.
The tower is about 30 meters tall and is built from lioz, a limestone quarried around Lisbon.
The cross of the Order of Christ is repeated along the parapets.
In 2007 it was voted one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal.
